Pushkaram is a festival in India which occurs in any particular year with respect to one of twelve important rivers, the river for each year's festival is based on which zodiacal sign Jupiter is in at that time. The first twelve days of the pushkarams is called "AADI PUSHKARAM" (Which means the beginning of the pushkarams) the last twelve days of the pushkarams is called "ANTYA PUSHKARAMS" (WHICH MEANS THE END OF THE PUSHKARAMS). During the period of these Twenty four days, "Pushkar" the god who is imbued with the power to make a river sacred and holy, will travel with Jupiter as Jupiter moves from one Zodiac house to another.

The rivers are being desecrated embrace by receiving the evil tendencies of the human being. As per the legend behind it, once Pushkara prayed Lord Brahma and asked him for boon to live in the sacred water in order to provide purity to the rivers. As such, the pushkara became the pushkara thirtham and lived in the mandakini river waters in the heaven.
HISTORY OF PUSHKARA
In ancient days, there was a righteous person named Tundulu who lived his life happily
and performed penance for the lord SHIVA. The lord shiva being satisfied with the penance of Tandulu and asked him for a boon. He asked for the immersion of self into the Lord Shiva. The Lord shiva being pleased to give him a place in his eight goddesses (water goddess). Thus, he became head of a half million holy shrines. Likewise, he was empowered to sustain all creatures with water. The power of sustainability in Sanskrit called PUSHKARAM. In this way, he became PUSHKARA. The Lord Brahma performed penance for the Lord Shiva to have water for his creation on the earth and asked him PUSHKARA for his assistance. The Lord Shiva accepted and ordered PUSHKARA to be in the KAMANDALAM of Brahma. The Jupiter prayed Brahma for releasing water to the human being for their sustainability. The Lord Brahma consented the request of the Jupiter but PUSHKARA did not. Then, the Jupiter, Brahma and Pushkara came to an agreement. As per the agreement, the PUSHKARA would be with Jupiter when it (in the form of Zodiac sign) enters into ARIES to PISCES for 12 days. It is said that during Pushkara all the Brahmaadi Devathas, Sages and Pithru Devathas will be residing in that Theertha (River) along with Brihaspathi and Pushkara. During Pushkara all the theerthas in the Universe will be entering into that particulat river and will be flowing as Antarvahini.
